Feeling drained at work? Find your inner fuel.

“How’s your new job?” I asked a friend over lunch.

“It’s fine. I’m just so tired,” she sighed.

This was an unusual response from one of the most creative, energetic, changemakery, and positive people I know. Her job was perfect on paper. The problem was that her inner motor was fueled by opportunities to be innovative, creative, and visionary — which this position didn’t offer.

She was running on empty.

For some people, having creative, innovative, out-of-the box work would be draining. Different things ignite our inner fire and propel us forward. If your work is making you “tired,” or you’re feeling stalled, it might be time to reflect on if your work is nourishing your unique engine.

Just like machines, different “fuels” energize people. Which of these archetypes sounds like you? (None are “better” than the other by the way, and you might be drawn to more than one).

Is your work providing you with the type of fuel you need?

If it isn’t, how can you add more activities into your day that express the archetype(s) you’re drawn to?

Please don’t starve yourself. Give yourself the nourishment you need. Change the work you have, or find new work that fuels your inner engine.
